Why did the Marine Corps and Navy choose to consolidate their individually registered apprenticeship programs?

The CNET automated system is capable of handling increased files/processing and scanning software for processing apprentice applications and progress reports. It offers apprentices webpage access around the clock to check their status during their participation in the program.


Why are the Air Force and Army not participating in the nationally registered apprenticeship program?

The Army is registered but has been inactive since 1991 due to downsizing and a major review to determine types of training that would be offered to military personnel.The ATELS has met with the Army and will continue to meet with them to determine whether they wish to reactivate their apprenticeship program. Air Force will be contacted by ATELS to determine interest.


What does an apprenticeship in the military consist of?

It requires both on-the-job training at the military installation as well as the completion of related technical instruction.


Where is the related instruction portion of the apprenticeship completed?

Most of the related instruction is completed at military schools, but some may be completed through correspondence and/or civilian instruction. Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) has Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with 30 professional certifying agencies with national or international recognition. Each MOU establishes procedures for administering tests to military personnel at base education centers worldwide. DANTES funds some certification programs for military personnel i.e.: Automotive Service Excellence).


How does the Joint Services Apprenticeship Steering Committee anticipate addressing acceptance of military training by private industry?

ATELS will bring the military branches, employers, and labor unions together to review registered military occupations to identify and standardize the on-the-job training, related instruction, and language. The Committee was formed to assist those veterans who have completed an apprenticeship make the transition to the civilian sector.

How long is the training in the different occupations in the USMAP apprenticeship program?

The length of training varies from 1 to 4 years of on-the-job training, depending on the occupation. Apprentices are also required to complete at least 144 hours of related technical instruction which supplements the on-the-job training.

Who is the USMAP program registered with?

It is registered with the United States Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, Apprenticeship Training, Employer and Labor Services (ATELS). ATELS is responsible for providing technical assistance to the USMAP and insuring that the program is being operated in accordance with Title 29 CFR Part 29 - Apprenticeship Programs.
