Volunteers Learn Valuable Skills at New SLS Workshops

Release Date: 2/8/2006

MCB QUANTICO, VA -- Marine Corps spouses contribute their time, talents, and efforts to the Marine Corps community in a variety of volunteer leadership and support roles. Ensuring volunteers have the proper skills and training to excel is the goal of the new Spouse's Learning Series.

The Spouses' Learning Series augments the old Spouses" Leadership Seminar program by offering multiple workshop options and online leadership and business management courses to help spouses further their personal and professional growth. Spouses who volunteer in the military community have priority when enrolling for the SLS workshops although all spouses are welcome to participate in the online courseware and may be able to attend workshops based on availability.

According to LtCol Jacqueline Melton, Head of the Family Readiness Branch at Headquarters Marine Corps, "The old Spouses' Leadership Seminar was developed to help volunteers learn the skills needed to take on added responsibilities and was offered only once a year at major USMC installations. With the Global War on Terrorism we have seen increased demands placed on our volunteer force and we recognized the need to expand our volunteer development programs.

The new Spouses' Learning Series provides three venues to further volunteers" personal skills and professional growth through a series of motivational workshops and online courseware intended to teach skills in areas such as Leadership, Communication, Teamwork, Stress Reduction, Goal Setting, Conflict Management, and Personal Enhancement.

"This multifaceted approach is the hallmark of the new Spouses' Learning Series. The 82 online courses provide the opportunity to gain valuable skills any time of the day or night, regardless of the spouse's location. These courses allow the spouse flexibility in managing his or her normal routine, and the skills can be directly applied to the spouses" volunteer efforts and be included on future resumes," said Melton.

"The annual motivational workshop, titled Follow Your Dreams While You Follow The Military, is our largest venue and is designed to provide spouses with the opportunity to focus on themselves; reinvigorate their energies and dreams, reduce stress and learn to become more adaptive to the ever-changing military environment. It is a great workshop - especially for our newer volunteers and spouses," Melton added. "Of the 411 Marine Corps spouses who attended the motivational workshop in 2005, 98% said they would recommend it to a friend."

Feedback from the new courses has been great. "This is my second Spouses' Learning Series program and this format and material is way better than the old format. I love that the focus was on me instead of how I can be more effective for other people. Thank you for making it all about me," said a spouse from Okinawa.

The Leadership Skills Workshop, focuses on leadership skills such as communication and team building. Participants take a self-scored personality assessment and learn how their personality type relates and can interact more effectively with others and leave with an understanding of the role and importance of fostering positive attitudes, building strong communication and understanding skills and leveraging different personality traits.

Key Volunteers from Camp Pendleton attended the first Leadership Skills Workshop and commented that the workshop provided necessary skills for what they would encounter in their volunteer efforts. "It is good for all Key Volunteers to understand how to deal with different personality types," said one participant. Another commented the workshop provided "useful subject matter that applies to all areas of life-not just work."
