Major Jay Antonelli Named USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Coach of the Year

Jay Antonelli was a two-year letterwinner for Navy and a 1992 graduate of the Academy.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Wrestling has named Naval Academy graduate Jay Antonelli the 2007 Greco-Roman Coach of the Year. It is the second time in his career that Antonelli has won this prestigious honor (1988, 2007).

Antonelli served on the coaching staff for the historic U.S. team that won the 2007 World Team crown in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was the first U.S. Greco-Roman team to win a Senior World Team title, and featured three individual medalists.

Depatto,  a Monticello, Minn. native, has been a member of the All Marine Wrestling team since 2004. CRETEIL, France (Jan. 30, 2008) -- When he started wrestling at age five, Monticello Minn., native Sgt. Donavan Depatto didnt know that one day he would be traveling the world to compete in the sport he loves.

During the Greco-Roman style tournament, the Marines squared up with world-class competition from more than 14 countries, including three world champions and six other world medalists.

Northern Plains Regional Championships and Senior World Team Trials Qualifier Results

The All-Marine Wrestling team competed in Waterloo, Iowa last weekend at the Northern Plains Regional Championship and Senior World Team Trials qualifier.  The winners of this tournament are automatically qualified to compete for a spot on the US World Team at the US World Team Trials of Wrestling to be held in Las Vegas June 8-10. 

Cpl Andrew Hogan (Okinawa, Japan) led the Marines by winning the tournament at 55 kg/121 lbs...

Members of the Marine Corps Wrestling Team competed at the 2007 USA Wrestling National Championship in Las Vegas, NV.  Sgt Donavan Depatto (MCB Camp Lejeune) and Sgt Jeremy Mclean (MCB Camp Pendleton) placed 4th and 8th respectively in the 60 kg Greco-Roman weight class.  Competing in the Sombo competition, Capt Juan Ramos (MCB Camp Lejeune) placed 5th in the 74 kg weight class.  

 

Marine Wrestlers Bring Home Team Silver and Eight Individual Awards

The All-Marine Wrestling team grappled their way to another team silver medal and brought home eight individual medals at the 2007 Armed Forces Wrestling Championship at Fort Carson, CO 21-25 March.  With six 2006 Marines either in Iraq or preparing for war, Head Coach Maj Dan Hicks introduced five new Marines to the Armed Forces mat.

ATHENS, GREECE - U.S. wrestlers Aaron Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and Philip Johnston (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) captured bronze medals&James Shillow (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marines), who placed fifth at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Acropolis Grand Prix on Feb. 24.
