MILITARY LIFE

TAMP Process

The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) was developed by the Department of Defense (DoD) to help separating and retiring Service members and their families make a smooth transition from a military career to the civilian sector.  For the Marine Corps, the program consists of five important components:

  1. Preseparation Interview.  This mandatory component is the beginning of USMC TAMP process.  The Preseparation interview is conducted by the Unit Transition Counselor (UTC) and shall consist of an explanation of the transition requirements for separating and retiring Service members including obtaining the Verification of Military Experience and Training (VMET) https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/appj/vmet/loginDisplay.do

  2. Preseparation Counseling Brief:  This briefing typically takes one full day and includes Subject Matter Experts outlining the benefits and entitlements available to transitioning Service members.  This brief is mandatory and must be completed before a Service member can separate or retire.

  3. Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Employment Workshop: Mandatory.  Qualified comprehensive workshops conducted by Department of Labor or TAMP personnel.  In the workshop personnel will learn how to write a resume and cover letter, get information on skills assessment, job search techniques, and other important information about career and job services available through DOL.  Service Members will learn how to access the DOL Career One-Stop Center in their local community to continue their job search if they have not found a job prior to separation or retirement.

  4. Veterans Affairs  Benefits Briefing : A briefing conducted by Department of Veterans Affairs personnel outlining VA benefits and entitlements available to transitioning Service members.  This component of TAP is sponsored by VA.  All separating and retiring Service members should attend a VA Benefits Briefing to learn about all the VA benefits they are or may be entitled to, the procedures for applying for benefits, information on the Montgomery GI Bill, and where to go to get VA assistance (healthcare, VA counseling at a Vet Center, etc.

  5. Disabled Transition Assistance Program (DTAP):  Specifically for individuals who have or THINK they have a potential disability claim.  DTAP is also sponsored by VA.  All Service members separating or retiring with a service connected disability must attend this briefing.  They will learn about eligibility for Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service benefits by VA.
