Enroll Your Smart Card
You're seeing Action required on your dashboard because your account doesn't have a smart card (CAC) set up yet. It takes about two minutes.
Before you start: plug in your card reader and insert your smart card. Use a computer that already reads your CAC.
Steps
-
Open your account menu
On your dashboard, click your name in the top-right corner.
-
Go to Account settings
In the menu that opens, click Account settings.
Click Account settings. -
Find Security Methods
Scroll to the Security Methods section. Find Smart Card Authenticator and click Set up next to it.
If you've set one up before, the button says Set up another instead. -
Choose your certificate and enter your PIN
Your browser asks you to pick a certificate. Choose the one for authentication, not email signing or encryption. Enter your smart card PIN when asked.
-
You're done
Smart Card Authenticator now shows as set up. Your account updates automatically within a few minutes. Refresh your dashboard, or sign out and back in, and the Action required tile will be gone.
After this, you can sign in with your smart card.
Having trouble?
I don't see a certificate prompt
- Make sure your card is inserted before you click Set up.
- Close all browser windows, reopen the browser, and try again.
- Check that your card reader is connected and its light is on.
I picked the wrong certificate, or got an error
- Close the browser completely so it forgets your choice, then repeat the steps and pick the authentication certificate.
My PIN is locked or I forgot it
- Contact your CAC or ID card office to reset your PIN, then try again.
The Action required tile is still there
- Wait a few minutes, then sign out and back in.
- Open Account settings and check Smart Card Authenticator shows as set up.
- If it's still there after an hour, contact the help desk.
