2010 Marine Corps Athletes of the Year Announced

HQMC (MR) QUANTICO, VA – Capt. Robert Hillery and GySgt. Quiana Scott have been selected as the U.S. Marine Corps Male and Female Athletes of the Year for 2009.

The pair will be honored at the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon Ceremony at the Clubs at Quantico in Quantico, Va., on August 6, 2010, at 11 a.m.

MCB QUANTICO, VA - The Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps will host the 2010, United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony here at the Clubs at Quantico, August 6, 2010 at 11 a.m.

General James F. Amos will induct Harry Liversedge, Gregory Burgess, James Phelan, and Charles Conerly at a luncheon ceremony that will celebrate their achievements.

Members of the All-Marine Tae Kwon Do Team constantly sharpen these skills so when they do face an opponent, in or out of the ring, they will be victorious.

 

2010 ARMED FORCES TAEKWONDO TEAM TRIALS

Fort Indiantown Gap, PA hosted the recent Armed Forces Taekwondo Team Trials this past Saturday June 19, 2010. This competition consisted of Taekwondo athletes representing the US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, and the US Army. These athletes had been training at the central Pennsylvania base since early June in a joint Services Training Camp hosted by Army. 

 

2010 ARMED FORCES TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP

Applications Needed for 2010 CISM World Military Swimming/Lifesaving Championship

  The 2010 Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Swimming and Lifesaving Championship will take place 23-29 August in Warendorf, Germany.  The United States CISM Team is open to all Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force participants. The CISM championship is a world class event, with past events including many of the world’s top swimming and lifesaving performers. 

Cherry Point hosts World Volleyball Championships

CHERRY POINT, N.C. -- Military volleyball players are taking their fighting spirit to the court at the Military Women's Volleyball Championships, being held at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. It was the U.S. versus the Netherlands Thursday.

Six countries are duking it out at the military championships, sponsored by the International Military Sports Council. Team USA was chosen after players competed for their branch in the Armed Forces Championships.

 

MARINES WIN THREE OUT OF FOUR COMPETIONS AT PLYMOUTH HALF MARATHON

Plymouth, England - On a windy Sunday morning, the Marine  Corps Running team dueled with British Royal Navy/Marines in the  Warriors from Across the Sea Challenge.  The top three male British Royal Navy/Marines runners defeated the top three male U.S. Marine Corps runners by a cumulative time of four minutes. The U.S. Marine Corps men's team did gain satisfaction in winning the men's team competition as the top four men are scored and the 4th Marine runner was significantly quicker than his British counterpart.

Armed Forces Beach and Indoor Volleyball Championship Results

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point - Men and women from every United States branch of service came to Cherry Point for the 2010 men and women's Armed Forces Volleyball Championship, May 3-11.

The championship consisted of beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. This was the inaugural Armed Forces beach volleyball championship, but it didn't seem to affect the players as they competed for the gold.

The men and women started the competition in the sand where the Navy women's team took the gold and silver and the Navy #1 men's team took control and beat the Air Force #1 men's for the gold.

edges of their seat at the Warfield Gymnasium on Naval Base Ventura County. As the
 
boxers stepped out of the smoke filled tunnel you could see the determination in their
 
eyes fueled by the desire to make their service and team members proud. The moment
 
 the first round of the 2010 Armed Forces Championship finals began, the excitement of
 
the crowed packed gym was high.

2010 Armed Forces Wrestling Championship; Marines Take Silver

The 2010 Armed Forces Wrestling Championship was held at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC 20-21 March.  The All-Marine Team captured team silver in both the Greco-Roman and Freestyle competitions.

Kona, Hawaii, October 10th, 2009 -- "Just as iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another," is a saying often heard among Marines. The saying comes from Proverbs 27:17. It could not have been more appropriate than along the circuitous course where four Marines joined elite athletes from around the world for the Ford Ironman World Championship.

They started in historic and hip Arlington, VA, winded their way through parts of D.C and finished near the Marine Corps War Memorial back in Arlington. For 26.2 miles along the way, over 20,000 men and women ran what is called "The People's Marathon," the 34th running of the Marine Corps Marathon.

John Mentzer, from Kittery, ME won the marathon with a time of 2:21:47. Placing second in 2:25:02 was Jacob Johnson of Sherwood, AR and the third-place finisher was Salvador Miranda of Mexico, finishing just behind Johnson in 2:25:24.

Official USMC Photo and story by Maj.Billy CanedoThe Philadelphia Distance Run is a half-marathon, or 13.1 miles, that runs along the center of the city, out the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, through the picturesque Fairmont Park and returns along the Schuylkill River for the finish. The race starts and ends at Eakins Oval, just across from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the steps now made famous by the movie "Rocky," starring Sylvester Stallone.

            From the start of the race the route follows wide and scenic boulevards lined with historical sites, such as: Independence Hall, the "Liberty Bell," and the house where Thomas Jefferson authored the Declaration of Independence.
