Marine Corps Athletes of the Year Announced

QUANTICO, VA  Captain. Mary Kate Bailey and Corporal Jacob Clark have been selected as the U.S. Marine Corps Female and Male Athletes Of The Year for 2004.

The pair will be honored at the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon Ceremony at the Clubs at Quantico in Quantico, VA.  The ceremony is scheduled for 29 July 2005.

Bailey, an Assistant Inspector assigned to the Inspector General's Office at Marine Corps Base Quantico excelled as a long distant runner during 2004.  After giving birth to her first child in 2003, she Bailey capped off the 2004 Season as the first overall female finisher at the Marine Corps Marathon and earned the Armed Forces Women's gold medal.  Already an accomplished runner, Bailey's 2004 season was her best ever as she was the overall women finisher in several events and scored personal bests in the marathon and half-marathon distances.  Her overall women finishes include the Quantico Half Marathon, Annapolis Ten Miler, Anderson 10k, Quantico 5k, and the Rosner Shamrock 4 Miler. In addition, she was the third overall female finisher at the Plymouth U.K. Half Marathon (Warriors Across the Sea) competition securing a Marine Corps victory over the British Royal Navy/Marine Team.

Clark, a Transportation Management Specialist assigned to the Traffic Management Office in Okinawa, Japan, was a multiple medal winner and runner-up to the 2004 Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling team.  Wrestling in the 84 Kg weight class, Corporal Clark won double gold medals at the Armed Forces Championship in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle, gold medal at the U.S National University World Team Championship, and grappled his way to first place at the Sunkist International Open and the Bison Open.  His international competitions include a second place finish at the Haparanda Cup in Sweden and a fifth place at the University World Championship in Poland.  As the National runner-up and first alternate to the 2004 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team, Clark was selected to the USA National Team and is currently ranked second in the Nation.
