MCB QUANTICO, VA - Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) South Carolina's Laurel Bay Youth Center has been selected as the 2005 recipient of the Secretary of Defense Fulcrum Shield Award.
The Fulcrum Shield Award is presented each year to a youth organization affiliated with the military which has made a concerted effort to assist in spreading the anti-drug message throughout their community. The annual award is named in honor of five military personnel from Fort Bliss, TX, who were killed in an airplane crash in 1999 while on a counter drug reconnaissance mission in Colombia.
Laurel Bay Youth Center was selected from military programs worldwide for its demonstrated enhancement to youth leadership. Club members were proactive in their community organizing a blood drive (resulting in 62 people donating), collecting $79 in pennies to help Tsunami Survivors, and establishing a program to keep community playgrounds clean. The club was also active in the Department of the Navy Drug Education for Youth Program (DEFY) taking part in program activities and hosting a dance.
The award will be presented at the Department of Defense's Red Ribbon Week on October 24, 2005.
