Release Date: 4/28/2006

MCB QUANTICO, VA - Sergeant Jacob Clark (MCB Camp Butler) captured the USA Wrestling National Championship on April 15, 2006, by defeating number one ranked Brad Vering in two rounds.

Clark, wrestling in the 84Kg weight class, has been the number two ranked wrestler in the nation since November 2003.  Clark briefly dropped to the number three position in March 2004, but quickly regained the number two spot.  In May 2004, Clark was the runner-up to Vering at the U.S. Olympic Trials.  For his accomplishments, Clark was named the 2004 Marine Corps Male Athlete of the Year.

When asked about Brad Vering being a thorn in his side, Clark responded, "I wouldn't say a thornI"d say a thorn bush. A thorn is a little thing.

Clarks victory qualifies him for the U.S. World Team Trials, 26-28 May, in Sioux City, IA.

Along with Clark, three other Marines qualified for the U.S. World Team Trials with their top ten finishes at the U.S. Nationals. Captain Frank Workman (MCB Quantico) finished third overall 120Kg, earning a position on the U.S. National Team.  SSgt James Shillow qualified with a sixth overall finish in the 66Kg weight class. Sgt Jeremy McClean finished strong with a seventh overall finish in the 60Kg weight class.  McCleans finish will improve his previous ninth place national ranking.
