Release Date: 6/13/2012

HQMC (MR), QUANTICO, VA - The Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James F. Amos, will host the 2012 United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony here at the Clubs at Quantico, July 27, 2012 at 11 a.m.

Gen. Amos will induct Col. Ralph A. Heywood, Mr. Vincent J. Dooley, and Mr. Joseph F. Fulks in a luncheon ceremony that will celebrate their military and athletic achievements.

Heywood is the only NFL player to serve on active duty in three wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Heywood was an All-American Football player at the University of Southern California and set a school record by being the first player in USC history to have 100 yards receiving in a single game. He also played professional Football with the Detroit Lions, the Chicago Rockets, Boston Yanks and the New York Bulldogs. Dooley, a former Marine Captain, was Head Football Coach of the University of Georgia Bulldogs for twenty-four years. One of the highlights of his stellar career came in the 1981 Sugar Bowl defeating Notre Dame after a perfect 12-0 season. Fulks, a former Marine Corporal, had a distinguished career in professional basketball. "Jumpin' Joe" Fulks was one of professional basketball’s first shooting and scoring sensations. He introduced the modern-day jump shot and shooting with either hand. Fulks held a ten year record for highest single game scoring a phenomenal 63 points in a game against the Indianapolis Jets in 1949.

The United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame honors former Marines who have excelled both on and off the athletic playing field.  Established in 2001, Hall of Fame inductees will be enshrined in the National Museum of the United States Marine Corps at the Heritage Center near Quantico, Virginia.

Forty-one former Marines have been selected for the Hall of Fame since it was founded in 2001. Past inductees include baseball legend Ted Williams, Olympic great Robert B. Mathias, International Boxing Hall of Fame member Ken Norton, and golf legend Lee Trevino.

Also to be honored at the induction ceremony will be several Marine champion athletes to include the 2011 Marine Corps Male and Female athletes of the year.
