Sponsorship: Building Connections from Day One

Military life comes with change—new duty stations, new assignments, new responsibilities, and new chapters. For Marines and their families, a strong start at a new duty station can make a difference. Marine leaders and sponsors play an important role in helping Marines get connected, while Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) provides tools and resources to help them navigate what comes next.

A sponsor assigned by the command is often one of the first connections a Marine and family makes at a new duty station. Sponsors can answer questions about the unit and local area, help newcomers understand what to expect, and connect them with resources that make the transition easier. Taking an active role as a sponsor is more than completing a requirement—it is an opportunity to help another Marine and family feel welcomed, informed, and connected from the start.

MCCS Relocation Assistance provides practical information to help Marines and families get familiar with their new installation and community. From local resources and installation services to relocation information, these tools can give sponsors and newcomers the information they need to get oriented and make informed decisions.

The Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) program can help take that connection further. Through its Deployment Readiness Coordinators (DRCs) and integrated capabilities, MCFTB connects Marines and families with information, support, and resources designed to help them navigate military life. Sponsors can help newcomers identify the right connections based on their needs and circumstances.

Connection also matters beyond a Marine's arrival at a new duty station. The Marine for Life Network (M4L) helps Marines build relationships with other Marines, veterans, family members, employers, community organizations, and government partners. That network can support a Marine who is transitioning from service, but it can also help Marines who are looking to expand their professional network, explore opportunities, or build connections throughout their careers.

Marine leaders do not have to figure it out alone. Training available through MCeLE can help sponsors understand their role and build the knowledge and skills needed to support Marines and families during a move.

A sponsor may be a Marine's first connection at a new duty station. The right MCCS resources can help turn that connection into a network of support that strengthens belonging, confidence, and long-term success.
