Tobacco-Free is Mission Ready

Tobacco-Free is Mission Ready

Your next mission starts with the choices you make today.
Mission readiness is built through daily choices that support your ability to train, recover, sleep, and perform. Tobacco and nicotine use can interfere with the habits and behaviors that support long-term health, recovery, and performance.

Nicotine may provide a temporary feeling of increased alertness, but it is not a sustainable performance strategy. Nicotine dependence and withdrawal can create a cycle that makes nicotine feel necessary to feel normal. Over time, tobacco use can also compete with the behaviors that help recovery, fitness, and consistent performance.

The Great American Smokeout
The Great American Smokeout, held Nov. 19, provides an opportunity to take a step toward becoming tobacco-free. The goal does not look the same for everyone. For some, it may mean quitting for the day. For others, it may mean creating a quit plan, identifying triggers, managing cravings, or seeking support.

If you use tobacco or nicotine, consider what role it plays in your daily routine and how it may affect your readiness. Identify when and why you use nicotine or tobacco, recognize situations that trigger cravings, and develop strategies to manage those moments. Support from peers, leadership, healthcare professionals, and other available resources can make the process more manageable.
