How the Voluntary Education Center Helped a Marine Reach Princeton University
When Sergeant (Sgt) Ethan Piety first walked into the Learning Resource Center at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar, he wasn’t sure where to begin. Like many Marines, he knew he wanted to start his academic journey—but navigating college enrollment and financial aid felt overwhelming.
Fortunately, the dedicated team at the Voluntary Education Center was ready to help. They immediately welcomed Sgt Piety and guided him through the process of completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and enrolling in his first college course.
Taking the First Step Toward Higher Education
Over the course of a year—and even through a deployment—Sgt Piety remained committed to his academic goals. With each class he completed, his confidence and ambition grew. The Voluntary Education staff quickly recognized his potential and encouraged him to apply for the Leadership Scholar Program (LSP)—a Department of the Navy initiative that connects qualified Marines with top-tier colleges and universities.
With their ongoing support, Sgt Piety also applied to several prestigious schools. Through resources like the Warrior Scholar Program, Service to School, and one-on-one help with application essays, the Education Center provided him with the tools he needed to succeed.
More Than Advisors—Mentors for Life
While the Education Center offered expert resources and direction, Sgt Piety remained responsible for managing deadlines, enrolling in courses, and driving his own future. As the journey continued, the education staff became more than advisors—they became mentors and trusted allies.
Their support helped Sgt Piety imagine possibilities beyond what he once thought possible. His hard work paid off: Sgt Piety was accepted into Princeton University’s 2025 transfer cohort.
