Each year, the United States Marine Corps recognizes outstanding leaders in suicide prevention who strengthen readiness and resilience across the force. For Fiscal Year 2024, Capt Andrew Choi was selected as the Active Component Suicide Prevention Program Officer (SPPO) of the year, and GySgt Oscar J. Castro Chavarria was selected as the Reserve Component SPPO of the Year.  

Advancing Suicide Prevention Across the Force 

Choi and Castro Chavarria demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing suicide prevention initiatives within their commands. Through their efforts, they: 

• Strengthened collaboration with commanders, medical personnel, OSCAR teams, chaplains, and fellow SPPOs. 
• Expanded access to suicide prevention education and training. 
• Promoted help-seeking behaviors and early intervention. 
• Increased awareness of lethal means safety resources. 
• Integrated prevention messaging into daily operations, unit events, and practical training. 

Their work supported the Department of War’s “Connect to Protect” campaign and reinforced the importance of relationships, engagement, and proactive leadership in preventing suicide.  

A Standard of Prevention Excellence 

Being named the FY24 SPPOs of the Year reflects more than individual achievement. It recognizes the profound impact they have on command climate, unit readiness, and the lives of Marines and their families.  

Their leadership sets the standard for excellence in prevention across the Marine Corps and demonstrates that protecting our Marines is everyone’s responsibility.
