When you hear the word "community," what comes to mind? A small town? A social gathering? While those are part of it, community means so much more.

Take a moment to reflect on how community has shaped your life. It’s where you find belonging—especially when you share common values and experiences. Your community is made up of those who stand with you in tough times, offering support—whether emotional or practical. It’s also the circle that holds you accountable and pushes you to grow. Ultimately, community plays a vital role in your well-being, boosting your mental and physical health and bringing joy.

Sadly, the importance of community is often overlooked today. In 2014, former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy discovered during a nationwide listening tour that many people feel disconnected and lonely because they’ve lost their sense of community.

As Marines and families, you are part of a unique and powerful community defined by esprit de corps and warrior ethos. You belong to something bigger than yourself. Still, it’s normal to sometimes feel isolated or out of sync with that community.

A strong community also plays a critical role in sexual assault prevention and support. When we stand together—looking out for one another and speaking up against harmful behaviors—we build a safer, more respectful environment for everyone. If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual assault, remember you are not alone. Reach out to trusted leaders, chaplains, or support resources available to help you heal.

If you ever feel disconnected, I encourage you to reach out to your chaplain. Chaplains are here to support you—offering spiritual guidance and counseling to help you gain perspective and find your way back to connection and balance. Don’t hesitate to lean on them—they’re a resource dedicated to your well-being.

Remember, community isn’t just a word—it’s the foundation of strength for every Marine and family.
