Family Dynamics Can Influence Substance Use

The effects of substance misuse are seen in all groups, including Marines. Many things impact the risks of substance misuse. Those influences can be individual, societal, at the community level, and within relationships, including family relationships.

Family dynamics play a significant role in either safe-guarding or contributing to problematic substance use. Recognizing these variables can help Marines and their families prevent this behavior and find appropriate resources when needed.

Prevention experts often talk about two things that affect wellness: risk and protective factors. Most people have heard of risk factors: characteristics that increase the likelihood of a person experiencing harmful behaviors. The term protective factor is less familiar: characteristics that directly decrease the likelihood of, or buffer a person from experiencing, harmful behaviors. These can promote health, overall well-being, and can build skills to bounce back from personal struggles.

Family-Level Protective Factors

  • Strong family bonds provide a sense of safety, love, and trust—especially crucial for military families facing unique challenges such as deployments and relocations.
  • Consistent emotional, practical, and social support from family can significantly reduce the impact of stressful events.
  • Effective communication is clear, open, and respectful communication, guiding families to navigate challenges together.
  • Participation in positive activities like volunteering, sports, hobbies, or family outings builds positive memories, strengthens relationships, and supports emotional wellness.

Family-Level Risk Factors

  • Family conflict. like frequent arguments or emotional tension within the household, can create emotional distress.
  • Easy access to prescription medications and alcohol increases the risk of misuse, especially among youth and individuals facing stress or mental health struggles.
  • Low family support can increase stress, anxiety, and poor decision-making, hindering successful military transitions.
  • Stress from transitions can become overwhelming without proper coping strategies or external support.
  • Family acceptance of substance use can undermine prevention efforts and increase the likelihood of misuse.

Substance misuse goes against Marine Corps values and undermines physical and mental fitness, hindering a Marine’s mission readiness. Stressful life events like changing duty stations, adding a child, or deployment can contribute to an increase in substance use.

It's important to develop healthy coping strategies before facing new challenges. If you and your family find yourself in need of assistance related to substance misuse, the following services are available through Marine Corps Community Services:

Substance Assessment and Counseling Program: Provides substance misuse prevention, deterrence, identification, early intervention, non-medical substance misuse counseling, and support services for Marines to promote wellness, resiliency, and mission readiness.

Services include prevention and education, Family Advocacy Program, and parenting support through the New Parent Support Program.

Community Counseling Program: Assists active-duty service members and their families with developing skills to manage life’s stressors and challenges.
