Strength at Home: MCCS Resources for Building Resilient Families

The strength of the Marine Corps is built on the strength of its families. This April, during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) is highlighting the resources available to ensure our military children thrive in safe, supportive, and resilient homes.

We all share the responsibility to prevent child abuse and neglect, support children who have experienced harm, and empower parents and caregivers with the tools needed to build strong, positive family relationships.

The Power of Community Support

A safe and nurturing home environment is critical to the well-being of every family and essential for mission readiness. By offering support, education, and resources, the Marine Corps community helps ensure children grow up protected from harm. Research shows that families who develop positive coping strategies are better equipped to manage stress—a key factor associated with child abuse and neglect.

The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) plays a vital role in strengthening Marine Corps families and preventing abuse. FAP provides a range of prevention-focused services designed to support healthy relationships and reduce risk factors, including:

  • Non-medical counseling
  • Parenting education and support
  • Stress and anger management classes
  • Relationship education

These services help families build resilience and navigate challenges before they escalate.

Embracing Support for Military Families

Many organizations are committed to preventing child abuse and neglect through education, awareness, and early intervention. Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) offers programs tailored to the unique demands of military life, ensuring families have access to comprehensive support.

Child & Youth Programs (CYP) provide quality childcare, youth sports, assistance with education transitions, and support for families managing medical or educational needs.

Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) helps new and experienced military families navigate military life by increasing awareness of available benefits, services, and resources.

Together, these programs support military families at every stage and help create environments where children can thrive.

The Marine Corps supports the Department of War mission to protect military children year-round by promoting positive parenting practices and fostering safe, supportive communities.
