Summer is a highly anticipated time for children and adolescents, offering a break from school and more free time.  

However, unstructured time can sometimes be challenging, particularly as mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts are on the rise in youth. Factors influencing these challenges range from individual to societal, but as parents, we can take steps to support mental wellness and help our kids thrive. 

To reduce screen time, which can negatively affect mental health, here are some summer activity ideas that promote physical, social, and mental well-being: 

Host an outdoor hangout. Encourage kids to invite friends for outdoor fun if they miss schoolmates

Suggest journaling. Encourage children to keep a journal to help children manage and understand their emotions. 

Set aside time for creative writing. Ask children to spend time writing this summer. For aspiring writers, summer is a great time to write stories and unleash their creativity. 

Take a hike. Getting kids outside for a hike offers a chance for physical exercise, fresh air, and nature exploration, whether alone, with friends, or family. 

Sign kids up for a summer reading club. Encourage summer reading by signing your kids up for a book club at the local library. 

Learn a new skill.  Learn something new, whether it’s a craft or hobby, to keep the brain engaged. 

Try a new recipe. Teach kids how to cook their favorite meals to build confidence and useful skills. 

Plant a garden. Garden with your kids to encourage responsibility and connect kids to nature. 

Explore outdoor adventures. Plan family hikes, bike rides, or park visits for active outdoor fun. 

Play a sport or game. Enroll kids in sports leagues or organize backyard games like soccer or tag. 

Host a dance party. Organize a dance party at home to provide exercise and laughter. 

Create a DIY obstacle course. Set up challenges that test speed and agility. 

Whether through sports, books, or time outdoors, encouraging kids to spend less time on screens and more time engaging in activities with friends and family is crucial for their mental well-being.
